Quick update from the tent.

I've started planking the hull with 9mm ply. I started off with the transom then added the first of the bottom. Which is 1 full sheet cut to the shap of the hull. To get the hull shape I lay the sheet on top popped a couple of screw in at the stern to hold it still then drilled pilot holes every 125mm and used a measuring stick to get the distance from the edge of the sheet to the stringer underneath. So I've been busy in tent fittong the 4 Oak Keel timbers and fitting the Stringers. Loads of work/time on the frames to get the Stringers in. I've used a Makita Multi tool for the job it make cutting out the frames to receive the stringers easy. The blades are a bit expensive but it saves loads of time and effort. They have all been Epoxyed in useing the 2 stage method(wetting out with Epoxy then thickend Epoxy to fill and glue the joints) with West System slow drying Epoxy.

So I've started cutting into the frames to take the stringers. This is taking some time, 7 frames and 10 stringers thats 70 individual joints and that doesn't count the keel floors. So a couple of days work with a circular saw and a Combi Tool which is a god send, the blades are expensive but the tool is worth the cost as it makes very presice cuts without shaking and shocking the jig with a malet and chissel.

This process is quite straight forward. Lots of measuring and consulting the plans. You do need to brace all the frame both fore and aft but also athwartships. A box of 80mm and 40mm wood screws and some pallets from a neighbours house for some free timber and a bit of ingenuity and job done.

Back in the tent So my frames are done and it's time move to stage 2. It feels like a mile stone has been reached. The timber for it I got from a builders merchant in our town 5 meters long [8x2] 200x50 and some [3×2] 75x50mm and a box of 80mm screws cost £120. Its taken me about 8 hours over two days. Its square and level but the uprights need support. Before I started putting it together I had to do a bit of space creation that revealed that I'd have a guest during the win

Getting started

This is the start of my adventure. I'm building a plywood box in the back garden and I'm going to sail it across an Ocean. The concept came from Don Mcintyre and 11 of these 19 foot (5.8 meter) sail boats are racing round the bottom of South Africa after sailing 21000 miles from Antigua.
